SC2TOG is a variation on a basic stitch and is a good one to have in your crochet know-how. It’s pretty easy to learn and will serve you in a variety of projects.
What is a SC2TOG in crochet
The SC2TOG stitch abbreviation means Single Crochet 2 Together. This stitch takes 2 single crochet (sc) stitches and puts them together (tog) into one. You start with 2 stitches and end up with 1.
What can you make with SC2TOG stitch
SC2TOG crochet stitch, just like other ‘-tog’ stitches is often used for decreases, to get rid of extra stitches. That is done to create the detail of part of clothing like neckline or armhole.
The decrease like SC2TOG is also used in amigurumi to shape the cute figurines.
You can also find in this like bags, hats, socks, and so on.
SC2TOG is a neat little stitch that helps you start going from crocheting just rectangular shapes to triangles and other shapes.
Things to know about SC2TOG
- SC2TOG sometimes is referred to as “decrease in single crochet”.
- Just like other ‘-tog’ stitches, SC2TOG is sometimes called a cluster stitch.
- Single crochet 2 together is often used as a part of the design as well, like in patterns that have lace.
- When the SC2TOG is used in the middle of the row, it often serves as part of the design. It joins up 2 SC stitches at the top, decreasing the number of stitches and also the length of your row.
- In fact, if you do several SC2TOG stitches side by side, your straight row will start to curve or even turn into a circle!
- When SC2TOG is used at the beginning or end of the row, that is usually to shape the item, for example, to make a slanted or triangle piece.
Here is how crochet SC2TOG
Here is how you crochet SC2TOG in the middle of the row
Insert hook into the first available stitch (front to back), yarn over, and pull the loop through. You have 2 loops on the hook. It’s like you are making an SC stitch but stop without finishing it.
Next, insert the hook into the next stitch (front to back), yarn over, and pull the loop through. You have 3 loops on the hook.
Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops at the same time.
And done, isn’t that cool?!
So, basically what you did here is to create 2 incomplete single crochets in a row and then finished them as one single crochet. This way the height of the final SC2TOG stitch stayed the same as other SC stitches around it.
Here is how you crochet SC2TOG at the beginning of the row
When you are doing SC2TOG at the beginning of the row, you would first CH 1 (to create first SC) and turn.
Next, you would insert hook into next stitch (front to back), yarn over and pull the loop through. You have 2 loops on the hook.
