A cold and windy weather calls for soft and cozy cowl to keep you warm and stylish! Stepping Stone Cowl is here to make your crochet dreams come true.
The Inspiration
It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for cowls. They are such a perfect winter accessory! Cowl is easy to wear, doesn’t take up a lot of place, doesn’t tangle with your hair and is a snap to put on.
And the awesome thing about smaller project like cowls? They often use less than 1 skein of yarn and are quick to make.
After the success of Malibu Cowl, I wanted to design another one and when I came across Lion Brand’s Feels Like Butta yarn I knew it was the perfect yarn for the project.
I used the yarn in color Seafoam because I love everything ocean and this color is just so soft and pretty. After choosing my favorite bobble stitch for this pattern, I had to pick a perfect name.
I reached out to my subscribers and they suggested the perfect name for this crocheted cowl: Stepping Stone Cowl.
The bobble stitches in this pattern arranged as the stones one above the other looking like stepping stones. I though the name was on the dot and so lovely.
The Yarn
Now, let me get back to the yarn I used for this crochet cowl pattern.
Lion Brand’s Feels Like Butta is such an amazing yarn and I believe it doesn’t get all the accolades it deserves. It’s soft and so squishy, reminiscent of the velvet yarn, but without the look of velvet (which will go out of style sooner or later).
Feels Like Butta is a chainette type of yarn, so the strand doesn’t split, which is wonderful. I used it in a knit project and in a crochet project and it was a pleasure to work with. I didn’t have to worry about my needles or hooks poking through yarn, it was great.
Also, the softness of this yarn is something that needs to be experienced in person, it’s so nice! I can totally see it being used for baby item, it’s so gentle and soft and it hugs you like a warm embrace.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand wearing anything scratchy around my neck. When I make a scarf or a cowl, it needs to be out of a yarn that is nice to wear next to your face. Feels Like Butta yarn is just that kind of yarn.
Feels Like Butta is a worsted weight yarn (4) and can be substituted with another worsted weight chainette yarn like Red Heart Amore yarn, but the color is so nice, that I would stick to it if you could.
The great thing about Feels Like Butta yarn is that one larger ball of this yarn has 590 yards of yarn! This makes it a one skein crochet cowl pattern. A ball of yarn is enough to make many cowls out of just one ball, or a cowl and a hat and a pair of mittens.
The Stitch
For the stitch, I went with a bobble stitch. I have used this stitch in one of my blanket designs with a extra bulky yarn and I had so much fun with it, I wanted to use it in another project.
The bobble stitch creates a fun look and it’s airy enough that it makes the crochet fabric drapey and nice to wear. I used the stitch in a way where it forms a checkered pattern that is very fun and calls attention.
And since the pattern uses only two main stitches, this crochet cowl pattern easy to get into the rhythm with and whip this crocheted infinity cowl in no time. I love projects like these! You can watch some TV while you breeze through your crochet project.
The Hook
For the hook I used one of my all-time favorites, a 6mm hook from BQueen Collection.
BQueen Collection make hand-turned wooden hooks with aluminum hybrid hook tips that are smooth and perfect with yarn like Feels Like Butta.
The wooden handle of the hook is light and ergonomically shaped – it’s a joy to crochet using this hook.
The Design
Since the project doesn’t take too long to make, you can make it as a gift in no time, or even make a couple cowls in different colors for yourself (Feels Like Butta in Ice or in Dusty Blue is also really pretty).
I made the design to be crocheted in a round so you didn’t have to deal with any seams when you are finished – only weave in the ends and you are good to go!
