I sit on the porch of my So Cal house and enjoy the cool breeze, at last! As much as I love Summer with its sunny days and visits to the beach, something about cool Fall days makes my soul sing.
There are a bunch of leaves to shuffle through now when I go on my evening walks and it makes me smile. Reminds me of the time when I was a kid and my mom would gather a large pile of red and orange maple leaves and I would run and jump into it.
I love Fall, can you blame me? Fall is like a promise of all things cozy and yum: hot chocolate, pumpkin pie, banana bread, and re-runs of Charlie Brown (a family tradition).
The Inspiration
One of our favorite family traditions is to travel in October. The weather is still nice and we have a birthday and an anniversary to celebrate. One of the all-time favorite places to go is San Francisco. I love love love that city.
It is beautiful, dreamy, and totally reminiscent of my hometown. Everything in San Francisco calls out to me – the architecture, people, food, the bridges, and of course, the bay views everywhere you look.
One of the best (and I feel under-promoted) places to go in San Francisco is Presidio.
Located on a territory of a former military fort, Presidio is a park and living quarters and golf park + views of Golden Gate bridge + forest + Lucasfilm headquarters to name a few. And so much more. And the best part? It all flows perfectly together as one would expect of the conservation site.
My husband and I spent a day there and it was magnificent. And, as it happens to me in the beautiful places, it inspired a new blanket design.
The Stitch
Presidio Chunky Lap Throw was born! And it had to be a cozy one since, since, as warm as it might be during the day, it gets chilly around the area, especially if you are visiting the Golden Gate Bridge museum.
And since San Francisco is really special to me, I decided to try a very special stitch for the Presidio Lap Throw: herringbone half double crochet (HHDC). I’ve seen it used in crochet projects and was dying to give it a go on my own.
The Yarn
When choosing the yarn, I didn’t even think twice, I knew it had to be the Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, it is chunky, warm and it’s a wool blend.
For this crocheted blanket, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Oatmeal and Fisherman. I love how the two colors complement each other. They add even more visual interest to the blanket on the top of the herringbone HDC stitch.
So, even though the throw is made entirely with the same stitch (for ease of making and to relax and get lost in this project), the change of color makes it feel fresh with every stripe.
To make sure that the blanket comes out soft and fluffy, I used a 15mm hook. I find that the recommended 9mm hook makes the fabric too dense and stiff.
The Design
I want to note here that, even though I made this blanket in two complementing colors, you don’t have to. You can make it just in cream or only in beige for the entirety of the blanket.
Heck, you can make it in any color you like, it’s your project! The weight of the yarn I used is bulky (marked as 6) so as long as you use this same weight, your blanket will come out similar to mine.
Presidio Chunky Lap Throw is designed using classic lines. It’s warm, fluffy, and timeless. It will look great hanging off your armchair or covering your sofa, or keeping you cozy at night, layered on the top of your bed.
The Pattern
Presidio Chunky Lap Throw is designed to be a relaxing project, something you can chill out with in from of TV or a nice crackling fire.
