As much as crocheters make projects from a variety of yarn weights and therefore use many sizes of the crochet hooks, I feel like all of us have a favorite hook size. Ok, maybe two.
For me, those favorite hook sizes are 15mm and 6mm crochet hooks. I actually used to be big on 5.5mm hook until I got myself a 6mm BQueen hook and I’ve been in love with it since.
But today I want to talk about my favorite 15 mm crochet hook.
When I began designing blankets back in 2018, I wanted to create something that uses basic beginner crochet stitches, super cozy and comfy and doesn’t take too long to do. I went for a chunky yarn (thank you, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick!) because when each of your stitches is big, the blanket works up faster.
Next, I had to decide what hook size I will be using with the yarn. The label on the yarn called for size 9 mm. And I tried it. And the crochet fabric felt super dense and super stiff to me, and to be honest, I wasn’t crazy about it at all. My crochet friends all raved about Thick and Quick, but the way my swatches were coming out, I was getting disappointed…
Until I remembered that if your crochet fabric comes out too dense and tight, you can try using a bigger hook and see how it comes out. I decided not to beat around a bush and go for a much larger hook.
I happened to get a large 15 mm hook off Amazon in the weeks before (because it was so big and chunky I just had to have it).
So I figured – what will it hurt? I swatched the blanket with the Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick (yarn weight 6) and the 15 mm hook (which also happened to be from Lion Brand) and magic! The crochet fabric was fluffy, soft, and super squishy.
The 15 mm hook was just the thing! And the best part? The hook was less than 7 bucks! And it was in light blue color (my fave!) It was a win all around!
I was super excited about how the swatch was coming out and so I decided to go for my first blanket.
Oh, I loved making it! The size of the hook totally made the work so much quicker and not hard on my hands because I didn’t have to force the hook through the loops. The loops were coming out loose and so crocheting them was so easy!
The crochet hook is plastic, so the acrylic/wool blend slides easily on and off it, making working with it a breeze.
When the blanket was done, it was an amazing squish! My daughter loved it so much, I gifted to her to have and to hold. Literally!
Since then, I have designed a dozen soft cuddly blankets with the same yarn weight and using my favorite 15 mm hook from Lion Brand. Through it all, the hook worked super well, and I still turn to it any time I work on my thick crocheted blanket patterns.
Where to find it + Options
LION BRAND
If you decide to get it, you can find it on Amazon, at Michaels, and on Lion Brand’s website.
If Lion Brand is not your thing, here are some other hooks that can totally do the job:
CLOVER
Clover 1059 Needlecraft Amour Crochet Hook, 15 mm. Clover Amour hooks have always been a crowd favorite and with the ergonomic design, working a larger blanket would be a pleasure.
BOYE
Boye 333623200QM Jumbo Crochet Hook, 15 mm Q. I actually have this one as well, I picked it up at my local Dollar King for a buck – amazing! You can check me using it on Instagram:
NAGINA INT’L
If you want something pretty, here is a gorgeous wooden hook from Nagina International Size P/Q-19 (15-mm) Authentic Rosewood Crafted Premium & Smooth Crocheting Hook. Be mindful though that when working with a wooden hook, your yarn might not glide as well as on a plastic hook.
The size of the hook can really make a difference in how your crochet project turns out and it can make a difference how much fun you have while you are working on it!
My favorite 15 mm crochet hook makes me smile every time I pick up a new blanket to design and I hope you can find your own personal go-to crochet hook.
