This morning I ran out of a kitchen dish scrubbies. I’ve been using one for the last few weeks and it was just gross. I tossed it out, went under the sink to grab another one and realized that was my last one. With everything going on right now, I really didn’t want to go out to the store just to buy the nylon scrubby, so I decided to make one out of some tulle I had. I ended up make a few and wanted to share the crochet scrubbies pattern with you.
There are many materials you can make a crochet pot scrubber with, and there is an excellent scrubby yarn designed just for that, or you can use a cotton yarn as well, but when in a pinch, a tulle makes a great material to use. It’s nylon, it has a grainy texture and even though tulle is soft and fluffy (when used in a wedding veil), its nylon net is firm and coarse when crocheted into a shape, making it into a perfect kitchen scrubby.
If you have an old veil or a tulle curtain, you can use them, by cutting the netting into 6 inch-wide strips. I happen to have a roll of turquoise tulle I got from Michaels last year and never used. It’s a pre-cut tulle, 6 inches wide and 20 yards long and it’s enough for at least 3-4 scrubbies.
Here is your crochet scrubbie tutorial.
To use tulle to crochet a nylon scrubby, you need to bunch it together along its length, gathering it from a strip into a make-shift yarn.
Once you have this tulle ‘yarn’, you can use it to crochet any shape dish scrubbies you want.
In this crochet pot scrubber pattern, I’ll show you how to make a rectangular one.
Material used: Celebrate It Tulle in turquoise, 6 inches by about 3 feet
Hook used: 15mm / Q crochet hook (to crochet), 8mm / L hook (to weave in the ends)
Other needed: scissors
Bunch up the tulle strip along the length of the fabric to make it into ‘yarn’.
Make a slip knot and with a 15mm hook, chain 6.
Row 1: sl st FLO (slip stitch into front loop only) into the second chain from the hook and into each stitch of the foundation chain (5 sl st FLO total).
Row 2-11: Turn, ch 1, then sl st FLO into next chain and rest of the st in the row (5 sl st FLO total). Repeat this row 9 more times.
Leave a 6-inch tail, cut the yarn and tie off. Using smaller 8mm hook hide the ends.
And voila! You have a cute handmade kitchen dish scrubbie! It takes no time to crochet and you can make a whole bunch from a single bolt of tulle.
You can make this crochet scrubbie wider by starting with a longer chain, or longer by making extra rows of sl st. You can make it a square shape if you want.
If rectangular shapes are boring for you, you can also make it a circle. I have another one of free crochet patterns for scrubbies for you.
Here is how to crochet circle nylon scrubbies.
Material used: Celebrate It Tulle in turquoise, 6 inches by about 3 feet
Hook used: 15mm / Q crochet hook (to crochet), 8mm / L hook (to weave in the ends)
Other needed: scissors
Bunch up the tulle fabric strip along its length making it into yarn. With a 15mm hook, ch 3 and close it with a sl st into a circle.
Row 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), then dc 11 more times into the center of the circle (total of 12 dc). Using sl st connect last DC to the top of the beginning ch 3 to close this round.
Row 2: ch 1 (counts as first sc), then sc into the first DC of the previous row. 2 sc into each dc of the previous row for the total of 24 sc around the circle. Using sl st to join last sc to the top of the beginning sc to close the round.
Cut the yarn leaving 6 in tail and tie off. Using smaller 8mm hook, hide the ends.
Since this pot scrubber uses only 2 rows, it’s even faster to make than the rectangular one and it’s so much fun! You can make a bunch to use for different things – one for pots and pans, one for dishes, one to scrub the veggies, and maybe even one to use in the bathroom.
I like this quick crochet project because it uses something you already have at home, takes almost no time to make and gives you something very practical that can be used around the house right away.
Using either crochet dish scrubbies pattern above, you can have fun working on a craft project and make useful items for your house all at the same time!
Feel free to share these patterns with your friends and family because you never know when they might need a kitchen scrubbie in a pinch!
